ABSTRACT

An investigation was carried out to determine the antimicrobial activity ofvetiver (Crysopogonzizanioides), was tested by using various solvents against E. coli, Pseudomonas sp., Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella sp. Antibacterial activity of Crysopogonzizanioides extracts (500 μg/ ml) were determined by disc diffusion method..Determination of antimicrobial activity revealed that methanolic extract of Crysopogonzizanioides of leaf and root extract showed antibacterial activity against multidrug resistant organisms like E. coli, Klebsiella sp.and Staphylococcus aureus. The highest zone of inhibition (26 mm) was observed in methanol extracts of leaves and roots of Crysopogonzizanioides respectively against Klebsiella sp. and E. coli respectively. The Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the extracts was tested by broth dilution method. The disc containing 5 % DMSO alone used as blind control. The minimum inhibitory concentration of crude methanol extract of root against Klebsiella sp. was 350 μg/ ml, against E. coli was 350 μg/ ml and against Staphylococcus aureus was 450 μg/ ml. The minimum inhibitory concentration of crude methanol extract of leaf against Klebsiella sp. was 350 μg/ml and against E. coli was 400 μg/ ml.
