ABSTRACT

The increased frequency of resistance to commonly used antibiotics has led to the search for newer, effective, cheap and easily affordable drugs in the management of infectious diseases. The present study was done to assess the antimicrobial activity of the leaf extracts of Chromolaena odorata and Hemigraphi scolorata and the peel extracts of Punica granatum against clinical strains of MDRSA. At first the resistant capacity of the test species was analyzed by antimicrobial susceptibility tests using standard antibiotic discs of various classes with different mode of action. Cold extraction method was performed using the solvents acetone, petroleum ether and distilled water. The antimicrobial activity was performed by disc diffusion method and the acetone extracts showed maximum zone of inhibition of about 9mm, 15mm and 16mm for the plant extracts Hemigraphis colorata, Chromolaena odorata and Punica granatum at 2.5mg/ml concentration, while petroleum ether and aqueous extract showed comparatively lesser activity. The antibacterial activity may be due to the presence of some active constituents in the extracts and hence the phytochemical screening showed the presence of alkaloids, carbohydrates, glycosides, oils and facts, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, terpenes and tannins. The MIC value obtained for acetone extracts for Punica granatum against MDRSA was 256g/ml and 512g/ml was found for Chromolaena odorata and Hemigraphis colorata. The results obtained from the study indicates that the plants Chromolaena odorata, Hemigraphis colorata and Punica granatum have immense potential to act against the multidrug resistant wound pathogen MDRSA.
