ABSTRACT

The side effects and quick microbial adaptation to resist synthetic antibiotic has compelled researcher to find out compounds from natural sources which are free from side effect and resistance. The present study has been carried out for assessment of antimicrobial activity of leaf and flower extracts of Wedelia trilobata using different solvents like acetone, methanol, chloroform, petroleum ether and distilled water against the standard strains of Staphylococcus aureus MTCC 96, Pseudomonas aeruginosa MTCC 424, E.coli MTCC 443and Candida albicans MTCC 227. The acetone and methanol flower extracts showed maximum activity against E.coli and Staphylococcus aureus and no activity was seen in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans. The MIC value obtained for acetone and methanol against Staphylococcus aureus was 512 g/ml and for E.coli the MIC values were 256μg/ml. Secondary metabolites are responsible for medicinal activity of plants. In the present study phytochemical screening of Wedelia trilobata was carried out and it is evident that the antimicrobial activity is due to the presence of various phytochemicals like saponins, terpenoids, phenolics, carbohydrates, alkaloids and tannins.
