ABSTRACT

The phytochemicals screening of crude extracts of the plant C. rutidosperma using different solvents revealed the presence of alkaloids, phenolic compounds, carbohydrates, phytosterols, fixed oils and fats, flavonoids, carotenoids, steroids, terpenoids and saponins. In addition, the chloroform extracts and ethyl acetate extracts showed the presence of most of the phytochemicals analysed. The alkaloid and saponins were estimated using the plant powder by gravimetric analysis. The total phenols and flavonoids present in various extracts were quantified by standard spectrophotometric methods. The concentration of total phenol was higher in the acetone extract as compared to chloroform and water extract. The highest concentration of flavonoid was seen in the ethyl acetate extract and least in the case of water extract. The chloroform extract displayed the highest antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In the present study, all the extracts showed a dose dependant DPPH scavenging activity, of which the ethyl acetate extract exhibited the highest activity with an IC50 value of 4 μg/ml.The highest FRAP value was observed in acetone extract compared to other extracts. In the reducing power assay, the reducing power of all the extracts increased with the increase in their concentration. Of all the extracts the acetone extract showed the highest reducing power. The GC-MS analysis of chloroform extract revealed the presence of 9 active compounds. The major compounds were 10-Octadecenoic acid, methyl ester (22.6%), followed by other compounds. The results of the present study indicated that the aerial parts of C.rutidosperma exhibited strong antioxidant activity and possessed considerable antibacterial activity and thus it can act as a good source of antioxidant and antibacterial constituents.
